Explore Funding Opportunities for Solar Water Heating with NYSERDA's C&I Carbon Challenge

Introduction to the C&I Carbon Challenge

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has introduced the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Carbon Challenge, aiming to help large non-residential energy users cut their carbon emissions. This initiative provides significant resources to large energy consumers, either directly or through preferred solution providers, to identify and implement effective decarbonization strategies. Through a competitive proposal process, selected winners will receive personalized support from NYSERDA to facilitate their projects.

Advantages for Large Energy Users

NYSERDA’s programs are designed to benefit businesses and organizations across New York State, addressing the specific needs of large energy consumers in improving efficiency and reducing emissions. The C&I Carbon Challenge enhances New York State’s commitment to innovative private sector solutions, offering flexibility for large energy consumers to use their in-house expertise or work with service providers to lower their carbon footprints and manage energy expenses effectively.

Funding and Award Information

Up to $10 million will be awarded through the C&I Carbon Challenge, with individual project awards ranging from $500,000 to $3.75 million. These funds can support single large projects or a series of smaller projects. The focus areas include beneficial electrification, carbon capture, manufacturing process emission reductions, and low-carbon fuel projects. Over a three-year period, awardees will collaborate with NYSERDA to refine and execute their carbon reduction plans, benefiting from the guidance of a dedicated project manager and technical expert.

Highlight on Solar Water Heating Projects

Eligible projects must target at least one of the following categories:

  • Beneficial Electrification
  • Carbon Capture, Utilization, and/or Storage
  • Low-Carbon Fuel Use
  • Manufacturing Process Emission Reduction

Notably, solar water heating is included as an eligible technology under this program. This presents a valuable opportunity for large energy consumers to adopt solar thermal systems, which can significantly lower carbon emissions and reduce energy costs. Additional eligible projects include:

  • Energy Efficiency Improvements
  • On-site Renewable Energy Systems (e.g., photovoltaics, wind, solar thermal)
  • Ground-Source or Air-Source Heat Pumps
  • Battery Storage
  • Other renewable energy or efficiency technologies

Eligibility and Application
